The weekend past, Noel and I caught up with some friends whom we haven’t seen in a while. With the perfect summer weather and both couples’ love for the winelands, we saw it fit that we catch up over a picnic at one of the wine estates in Stellenbosch. Stellenrust Wine Estate was running a promotion whereby, when you purchased a picnic basket for two, you received a free wine tasting of some the wines produced on their farm.
The picnic “basket” (it came in a nicely wrapped box) was so worth the money. All my favourites were included 🙂 – salami, French loaves, feta and olive salad, camembert cheese, pate’s and preserves. For dessert, delicious Lindt balls didn’t disappoint. These all went so well with the wines that were recommended as part of the tastings. An added bonus was the free champagne tasting and a bottle of estate wine that we packed in to enjoy at home. After all, the wine tasting provided us with more than enough thirst quenchers.
The wine estate is situated in the heart of Stellenbosch and without our good friend “GPS’ we would have definitely gotten lost. You have to travel on a gravel road for about two kilometres before you get to the entrance of the estate and for quite a few times, we wanted to turn back fearing that we had taken a wrong turn. But it was all good in the end – the surrounding beauty and the estate itself, made up for those doubtful moments.
The estate is absolutely beautiful. When we arrived, they were preparing for a wedding ceremony that was due to take place later that afternoon. The garden of the estate is paved with white roses contrasted by the green grass and in the middle of the entrance to the reception area, there is this beautiful water feature that just adds such a romantic touch.
Noel and Gary, have been friends since kindergarten, but as life unfolded, they haven’t seen each other in more than a decade. Surprisingly, after catching up with them after all these years, it was amazing to see how well they still got along and how effortless the conversation was. People change a lot in a decade and so you don’t know if you will still have anything in common. But there was lots of reminiscing about the good old days, especially high school, where most of their wild memories stem from and it was as if they just picked up where they left off all those years ago 🙂 . There were also some “secrets” which were revealed that raised an eye-brow or two with the ladies :). Some friendships really do stand the test of time 🙂 . Co-incidentally, I also worked with Gary’s wife Elize a few years back, and we both enjoy running, so there was no awkward silences between us either.
The day was just amazing. Everything was perfect – the wine, the food and the company – definitely a good match in my book !
